PlayStation 4 Sales Lower Than Expected

With the popularity surrounding Sony’s PlayStation systems, the company expected higher sales of the PlayStation 4 than they received, according to a financial report the multimedia company released today.

According to the report, the PlayStation 4 sold 2.8 million units during its second quarter, which ended on September 30, 2019. This is a 1.1 million decrease in units sold compared to last year, and speculation would assume this is a result of the PlayStation 5 being in the works and presumably slated for holiday 2020.

Moreover, software and digital revenue decreased by roughly $.57 billion compared to last year’s sales. According to a quote originally found on Gamasutra, Sony attributes this decrease to “game software sales[decreasing] primarily due to the absence of the major first-party hit title Marvel’s Spider-Man, which was released in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year, and a significant year-on-year decrease in the contribution from free to play games.”

Most of the report’s financials are conveyed in yen, but there are some conversion figures available in the report as well as current conversion rates found online. Due to the overall decrease in PS4 sales, both hardware and software, Sony has decreased their shipment expectations going into the next quarter and fiscal year. With the Ps5 and Microsoft’s Project Scarlett in the works, PS4 sales will likely continue to decrease over the next year, but may also plateau with the 2019’s holiday season approaching.

Future earnings may also increase with the release of more exclusive titles, such as the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Remake due out on March 3, 2020.
