With the annual Gamescom event now over and done with for 2019, the coveted awards from Europe’s largest electronic showcase have been unveiled. While 2K Games and Gearbox Software’s upcoming Borderlands 3 took home two awards in ‘Best Multiplayer Game’ and ‘Most Wanted’ awards, it was Media Molecule’s Dreams that stole the show as judges praised the creation sandbox title with the Best of Gamescom award.
The new game form Media Molecule has been garnering tons of attention since late last year and early on this year once it released its Early Access mode which includes the game creation tool kit. The full game has yet to release, which will include the game’s actual campaign mode along with the in-depth but intuitive curation studio.
Other awards goes to Borderlands 3 as it takes home the ‘Best Multiplayer Game’ award. Borderlands 3 has been highly anticipated for years as fans haven’t seen a proper release in the series since 2014’s Pre-Sequel, but even then that title wasn’t developed by Gearbox Software’s A-squad who were the developers behind both Borderlands and Borderlands 2. Borderlands 2 released to ultimate praise in 2012 which heightened expectations for the looter-shooter series. Borderlands 3 looks like the proper sequel from Gearbox fans have been craving, which is exactly why the upcoming game also received the ‘Most Wanted’ award by the consumers during Gamescom, as well.
Additional notable awards from the event highlights the ‘Best Indie’ award to El Hijo from Honig Studios, the ‘Best Games Company’ went to THQ Nordic who has Destroy All Humans Remake, Darksiders Genesis and Biomutant on their upcoming radar, and Monster Hunter World: Iceborne takes home the ‘Best Ongoing Game’ due to Capcom’s lively dedication to the year-and-half old game.
There were tons of great games on display during this year’s Gamecom event, as well as some exciting reveals and announcements. Sega made out big with the Yakuza Remastered Collection announcement along with their new IP HumanKind also revealed during the event. There was also some intriguing gameplay shown off for upcoming games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Hideo Kojima’s upcoming new IP, Death Stranding.
All in all, I’d say it was a rather eventful event once again for annual showcase. Up next is the illustrious PAX West which takes place next week starting on August 30 and running until September 3, 2019.
