The first Super Nintendo World theme park in the US is set to open in 2023. An extension to Universal Studios Hollywood in Los Angeles, California, the new area will transport theme park guests into the world of Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach. Included in the expansion are themed shopping and dining areas, as well as a new “groundbreaking” ride and interactive areas.
The park is a product of a partnership between Nintendo and Universal Creative which seeks to deliver “exhilarating entertainment with innovative technological achievements inspired by characters and video games that have appealed to generations of Nintendo fans for over 40 years.”
This is of course not the first Super Nintendo World to open, as the first one opened in Japan in 2021 to rave reviews. While we don’t know exactly what the Hollywood version will include, we can guess that it will be very similar to the one in Japan, which includes a high speed Mario Kart ride and a slower, tamer Yoshi ride all in an area designed to look like you’re in a Super Mario game. You can find out more info at the official Japanese site.
In the months leading up to the official opening of Super Nintendo World Hollywood, Universal Studios will be updating its Feature Presentation retail store to new Super Nintendo World theming, and will be selling a variety of Mario themed merchandise including things like plush characters and Mario and Luigi themed shirts.
This is also not the only Super Nintendo World that is planned to be opened in the US. Another extension to Universal Studios Orlando in Florida has also been planned, as well as one for Universal Studios Singapore. Super Nintendo World Orlando is scheduled to open in 2025, as part of the new Epic Universe addition to the resort. Epic Universe was originally scheduled to open sooner, but has been delayed due to Covid.
Japan also plans to expand its park with a Donkey Kong themed area in 2024.
