Amazon’s Cloud Gaming Service Luna Announced

Amazon has today launched its own cloud gaming service, Luna. The new service features games from Capcom, 505 Games, Remedy, and Team 17. Ubisoft’s games will be added to the “growing library” of Luna.

Luna will have Luna+ game channel will be available for an introductory price of 5.99 USD per month during early access. Subscribers will get access to games like Resident Evil 7, Control, A Plague Tale: Innocence, Iconoclasts, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, and more. Luna+ also allows for two devices to stream games simultaneously in addition to 4K/60FPS for certain titles.

Introducing Luna, Amazon’s cloud gaming service where it’s easy to play great games on devices you already own,” the official site states. “No waiting for lengthy downloads or updates — just play.” It would seem that Amazon Luna will include multiple different gaming channels which people can subscribe to for access to different publishers and the like.

Amazon Entertainment Device and Service VP, Marc Whitten affirms that Amazon’s vision for Luna is to make it ” easy” to play games on the devices customers already own.“It’s Day One for Luna—we are excited to work with gamers, streamers, and publishers like Ubisoft and Remedy Entertainment to build a great gaming experience for everyone” Says Whitten.

Phil Spencer sees in Amazon a real competition ahead of the future of consoles, the kind of investments that Amazon can afford in cloud gaming technologies and acquisition of large game studios can only be matched by Google and Microsoft.

When you talk about Nintendo and Sony, we have a ton of respect for them, but we see Amazon and Google as the main competitors going forward. That’s not to disrespect Nintendo and Sony, but the traditional gaming companies are somewhat out of position. I guess they could try to re-create Azure, but we’ve invested tens of billions of dollars in the cloud over the years.

I don’t want to be in a fight over format wars with those guys while Amazon and Google are focusing on how to get gaming to 7 billion people around the world. Ultimately, that’s the goal.
