Christofer Sundberg has announced a new studio, Liquid Swords.Founder of Avalanche Studios and creator of the Just Cause franchise, Christofer Sundberg has announced the creation of a new super studio, Liquid Swords. With his departure from the Just Cause franchise last year, Sundberg wanted to clarify this was not due to a new path he wanted to go down in terms of game genre or gameplay. Sundberg still wants to provide what he believes is central to what he enjoys the most about games; an experience the player can pick up and immediately find something engaging and exciting. “I have loved player freedom and creativity ever since I first started making games and with Liquid Swords, I am confident we’ll provide the go-to games for fun entertainment for decades to come.” This departure and new branding seems to mean Sundberg wants to dive further down the ridiculous rabbit hole of explosions and action, not veer from it with a new studio. The studios tenets reflect as much, saying it wants to focus on “open world action, explosions, shareable experiences and memorable game moments.”What was different here from most announcements of this kind was Sundberg’s candor and openness about their goals: “We have no intention of reshaping the world of storytelling as we know it. Our road to leaving our mark and making a difference in the industry is built first and foremost on games that are immediately accessible and consistently rewarding.” Sundberg is being very intentional in letting the public know the studio’s intentions for what game it’s trying to put out. With the right expectations set, an open-world made by these guys could be something really unique.Sundberg went on to explain plans for Liquid Swords, wanting it to bring gaming studios focus back to where they should be: on creativity and moving gaming development forward “rather than business plans and spreadsheets.”Sundberg left by saying that future plans and announcements would start coming in early 2021.
