Interplay Entertainment and Black Isle Studios announced today that Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance for Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4, on May 7 for $29.99. The game will also release on PC and mobile devices later this year.
Originally available for PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Nintendo GameCube, the new game features local cooperative gameplay, enhanced graphics, and up to 4K resolution on supported devices.
The game is a re-release, it is not a remaster or a remake, so players should not expect new gameplay features. It’s confirmed that the game will work on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 via backwards compatibility.
Black Isle Studio was teasing the game over the past few weeks on Twitter, the developer posted gameplay videos leading fans to think it was just a nostalgia trip, however, the developer uploaded widescreen videos which suggested the re-release of the 20-year-old game.
Following the announcement of Baldur’s Gate 3, a game also inspired by Dungeons & Dragons, there was a surge in the interest for the franchise, and several new games were confirmed to be in development.
Wizards of the Coast president reportedly affirmed that “seven or eight” videogames based in the world of Dungeons & Dragons were already in development. Fans knew that one of those was Baldur’s Gate 3 and the other is Dark Alliance.
Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance was critically acclaimed on all four platforms, the PlayStation 2 version of the game was nominated by the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences award for “Role-Playing Game of the Year” in 2001. A sequel, Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance II, was released in 2004 for PlayStation 2 and Xbox. A third game was in the plans but was inevitably cancelled early in development due to the closure of Black Isle Studios after Interplay went bankrupt.
