Last week, it was revealed that Xbox will be rolling out an FPS boost for certain games from the previous console generation. To start with, titles like New Super Lucky’s Tale will see a new frame rate of 120 frames per second (FPS). Later, games such as Sniper Elite 4, Watch Dogs 2, Far Cry 4, and UFC 4 shall be enhanced in order to run at 60 FPS on the Xbox Series S.With the FPS boost being focused on games from the Xbox One generation, we decided to make a list of the games we most feel should receive a similar improvement on the Xbox Series X.
Now that Bethesda is under the Microsoft umbrella, we could possibly see some performance updates come to their games. Among the titles that might benefit from such treatment, Fallout 76 stands out as perhaps the most likely to thrive as a result. While the online RPG is currently running at a locked 30 FPS on the Xbox Series X, Fallout 76 has received multiple content updates since it was released. Boosting its frame rate to 60 FPS would be an even greater gift to the game’s community, which has put up with the game’s ongoing struggles with bugs.Besides Fallout 76, other Bethesda-published games like Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 4 would be excellent additions to the FPS Boost program. After all, it would serve to give players a smoother and more stunning experience exploring the post-apocalyptic versions of Boston and Las Vegas than ever before.
Without a doubt, one of the best looking games of the previous generation was Red Dead Redemption 2. There was something wondrous to taking in the natural sights while riding on horseback between cities and points of interest. Alas, that beauty and graphical detail has come at a cost with every version of the game to date. Red Dead Redemption 2 on the Series X only reaches 30 FPS, perhaps a tradeoff for the native 4K resolution. Even on the Xbox One X and PlayStation 4 Pro, the game pushed the given hardware to its limit. Now that we have new consoles with great capabilities, however, we believe Red Dead Redemption 2 is past due for a boost to its performance. One tiny problem that may arise is Rockstar Games’ possible reluctance to allow the FPS boost on their games. As they plan to bring an updated version of their 2013 game Grand Theft Auto V to the Xbox Series X, they might have a similar plan to bring an updated version of Red Dead Redemption 2 to the new systems. Thus, an Xbox update to their game might complicate more things than it helps.
Sports game franchises like NBA 2K, FIFA, Madden NFL and NHL all tend to deliver amazing graphics while running fairly well at 4K resolution. They even manage to hit and maintain a steady 60 FPS, the standard benchmark preferred by players. However, with the fluidity and quick movements that we experience playing as our favorite sports teams, those franchises would look even more crisp if they were to run at 120 FPS.
With Blizzard having just released a significant amount of information about the upcoming Overwatch 2, I believe it is time for the original game in the franchise to be brought to 120 FPS. Considering that Overwatch is a fast paced game when players really get into the action, having it run at 60 FPS isn’t doing the game any justice. On top of that, Overwatch has an incredible art style, with each hero having powerful abilities that look beautiful when they are shown on screen. Charging with Reinhardt’s shield, using Mei’s tank to destroy the enemy, or relying on Soldier 76’s automatic aim for perfect shots would look so much better when the game is able to be played at a frame rate higher than 60 FPS. Not to mention, it would even the playing field between console players and the PC community, the latter of which has frame rates that are three times that of the current console generation. That said, one complication that may throw a wrench in this idea is that Blizzard is fully focused on developing Overwatch 2, so they may be satisfied with the 4K resolution and 60 FPS that is the current standard for the Xbox Series X. Then again, Blizzard could always surprise us.
This should be a no-brainer as decisions go. Xbox always wants fans to experience their first-party games in the best possible way in order to showcase their newest hardware, a trend which will continue with Microsoft titles. With exclusives like Halo: The Master Chief Collection already receiving their 120 FPS update, the door is open for other first-party games to receive this beautiful makeover. For instance, one game that would look stunning in a higher frame rate is Sunset Overdrive, which currently runs at 30 FPS. A favourite for many from the Xbox One generation, this colorful open world with weird weapons was a proving ground for Insomniac Games to create a successful sandbox open world, leading them to land the Spider-Man franchise just a few years later.
