Bethesda Wants To Go “Deeper” With Next Elder Scrolls

Bethesda might be full speed ahead when it comes to making sure their upcoming sci-fi RPG Starfield is able to release on time later next year in 2022, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t also thinking about Elder Scrolls VIwhich will be their next project. During an interview on IGN Unfiltered, Todd Howard seemed willing to discuss plans for their next game in the long-running high fantasy RPG.

While the game is still only in the designing/prototyping phase, the team developing the game already has some clear ideas on the game’s direction. Bethesda seems to already have several ideas for how they want to improve the game over its predecessor Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and a level of depth they want to achieve.

During the interview, Todd Howard stated:

There are a number of parts of [Skyrim] where we don’t go deep enough, where it’s a veneer in terms of its interactivity. When we think about games and what we would want to do going forward, it’s okay…whatever that system is…how deep can we make it?

He then stated that the Elder Scrolls VI team is also interested in improving the interactions with NPC characters, as well as the artificial intelligence that governs them. Since much of an Elder Scrolls game involves talking to the characters that populate the world this would be a great place to begin adding depth.

On the topic of Starfield, which was the initial topic of conversation, he discussed the need to create a new IP, something that the studio had not had a chance to do in some time. He stated that

We’d been wanting to do something else for a long time and play in a new universe, so if not now…when? It felt like, if we didn’t do it then, the ‘when’ could be ‘never’.

Starfield

will likely a better look at what Bethesda is now capable of when developing games, and therefore should offer better insight on what we might be able to expect from Elder Scrolls VI. For those that want to jump back into the world of Skyrim, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim 10th Anniversary Edition is set to release on November 11, marking yet another re-release for the game.
