The president of PlatinumGames has promised some “big news” to come sometime in 2020.
In an interview with Japanese publication Inside Games, Kenichi Sato suggested the company may delve into “the beginning of a new stage” early this year. The Olympics coming to Tokyo in 2020 has made Sato’s desire for Platinum Games to be that of the company operating at “full speed” during the year, thereby enhancing the public’s focus on Japan.
PlatinumGames also has two original IPs in development and continues to work on Bayonetta 3—which director Hideki Kamiya, according to Video Games Chronicles, recently said was progressing well.
What the company’s “big news” regards is unknown, but studio head Atsushi Inaba implemented methodology changes, as he mentioned to VGC, “including new approaches in how [PlatinumGames] designs its games, in an attempt to build a ‘new foundation’ for the company.”
PlatinumGames is a Japanese video game developer headquartered in Osaka, Japan. The company was founded in October 2007 after a merger between Seeds Inc. and Odd Inc. After the company’s founding, SEGA announced it would publish for titles developed by Platinum Games: MadWorld, Infinite Space, Bayonetta, and Vanquish. A fifth game would later be published by SEGA, Anarchy Reigns.
The developer initially wanted to create new and original intellectual property, but has also accepted contract work from Activision on multiple licensed projects. Nintendo has also funded multiple PlatinumGames projects, including The Wonderful 101, Bayonetta 2, and Astral Chain. PlatinumGames also worked on Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance for Konami, Star Fox Zero for Nintendo, and Nier: Automata for Square Enix.
The team’s work on Nier: Automata came after the cancellation of Scalebound, a game that was funded by Microsoft Studios (now Xbox Game Studios).
