Blizzard to Improve Twitch Chat Moderation for Overwatch

Blizzard has found a clever way to keep things clean in Twitch chat for Overwatch events, they had established a new moderation system that will force viewers to link their Twitch and Battle.net accounts in order to post comments in the chat.

This new moderation system is being implemented right now on the Twitch channel for Overwatch Contenders, so if you start watching it you’ll be prompted to link accounts in order to comment.

The aim is to create a “more positive viewing experience”, Blizzard said on the Overwatch Contenders blog. It’s not clear how exactly it will work: the developer didn’t mention any punishment for Twitch chat toxicity, but the fact your accounts will be linked suggests that any punishments on Twitch could also have an impact on Battle.net.

Competitive Overwatch could certainly do with cleaning up its act. This year, Blizzard took action against a number of pro players in the Overwatch League for offences ranging from racism to homophobia. Last week, it launched a “player discipline tracker” that will keep a running record of players who violate the league’s code of conduct, and the penalties they incur—there are already seven players on the list.

Overwatch Contenders is a high-level tournament series for aspiring pro players who dream of ascending to the Overwatch League. There are seven Contenders regions, some home to Overwatch League Academy teams! In each region, 12 teams show off their skills and talent in three regular seasons per year, followed by regional playoffs. Season 3 quarterfinals starts today and will run until January 12th.

This system is being implemented for now on events but I’m sure that Blizzard will get the results they hope and this system will most likely to be implemented for all Blizzards games.
