It looks like that online multiplayer will be added to Super Mario Maker 2 as the new level-builder adds new ways to play others’ creations. In fact this seems to be the perfect way to play with friends online who are on the go, or just want to try out some new difficult levels.
Well it seems that the game will allow you to play with your friends locally through your typical wireless and single-system means. Online however, is out of the question for playing with friends. While you can play online through co-op or competitive levels in Super Mario Maker 2, they will have to be done through random matchmaking.
While random matchmaking through co-op and competitive games makes sense for maybe the likes of Splatoon 2, which also includes a friend party system. You would think that inviting your friends to do some matchmaking would be a simple process online in this case.
Well Nintendo has an answer for why they’re doing this. They explain that since the game uses global leaderboards, the matchmaking for competitive play would be compromised if playing with friends. Of course co-op play is also affected even though there are no leaderboards for that mode.
While this answer is not something players want to hear as in most games that include leaderboards, there are separate scores between friends and competitive online modes. While this is the case, Nintendo says that they have no plans to update this feature for launch. This does not leave out any future updates to the game as Super Mario Maker on the Wii had many updates after launch.
While you can’t play with your friends online, player definitely will be able to play with friends through local means. While it’s not Online Play, friends will have to get together under one roof if they want to do multiplayer.
