Capcom Will Make PC Its Main Platform

Noticing its ever-growing PC Audience and global sales numbers Capcom seems poised to make a switch, focusing more of its energy into the PC versions of their games. To this effect, Capcom looks to turn the PC into its “main platform” moving forward. This is a drastic switch in its marketing as it has largely focused on the console market, dating back all the way to its early days releasing titles for the NES.

In an interview with the Tokyo-based newspaper Nikkei Haruhiro Tsujimoto, Capcom’s chief operating officer stated that the company plans to increase its PC software sales to the point where that platform accounts for half of the companies global sales. This, he stated, will be met by the end of 2022.

This pivot toward the PC market is based on the increase in digital sales accrued by the company over recent years. While PC gaming was on the rise in Japan overall, the Covid-19 Pandemic caused a spike in PC gaming as well during the lockdowns that the country experienced, making the platform even more lucrative.

Tsujimoto told Nikkei:

We will expand our business for dedicated game consoles, which has been the mainstream up to now, but PC will be the mainstream in the future. Next year or the year after, we want to equalize the ratio of sales to PCs and dedicated consoles.

This decision makes further sense when you look out at two of Capcoms most recent titles. Monster Hunter Worlds saw its second-largest audience on the PC platform, while Resident Evil Village set a franchise record for concurrent players on steam with 101,726 players.

He then added that:

We have recently stated that we will make the PC our main platform. At this year’s Tokyo Game Show, we focused on exhibiting the PC version of Monster Hunter Rise, and I think people will be able to experience the change in our approach.

Players will have to wait till the demo for Monster Hunter Rise on October 13th, before we will know for certain if this change in approach is as apparent as he stated it would be. We do know that the game will feature voice chat, 4K visuals, and ultrawide display support.
