Chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios Shawn Layden is announced to be stepping down by PlayStation themselves. This does seem sudden as nobody seems to be replacing him at the moment and has no reason for his departure.
Here is a quote from the announcement on Twitter:
“It is with great emotion that we announce that Worldwide Studios Chairman Shawn Layden will be departing SIE. His visionary leadership will be greatly missed. We wish him success in future endeavors and are deeply grateful for his years of service. Thanks for everything, Shawn!”
Shawn Layden is the former president and CEO of of Sony Computer Entertainment America and has been with Sony since 1987, mostly acting as the vice president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe and president of Sony Computer Entertainment Japan.
Sony then Consolidated its worldwide PlayStation divisions into a single unit in 2018, the company said that Layden would “concentrate his focus” on leading Sony’s game development studios.
This does seem to be an end of an era for the PlayStation brand as he has been with the company for about 32 years and eventually became a producer in Sony Entertainment.
Layden did a great job leading PlayStation into the direction it’s heading in and hopefully PlayStation will continue to improve later on after his departure from SIE.
