Crytek announced at GDC 2016 the latest iteration of it’s game engine called CryEngine 5. This Engine first debuted when the first Far Cry was released back in 2006 and then Crytek optimized it’s engine to an extend that when Crysis came out in November 2007, it was developed using CryEngine 2 and that was a big leap from the first one, it was breakthrough technology for the time, nothing looked even remotely as good as Crysis back in those days.
Now years later, Crytek is stepping up to the game once again with it’s new Crytek Engine 5, and it’s packed with tons of new features such as a revamped engine UI, a new particle system that is designed to run almost entirely off the GPU, Direct X 12, and full VR support.

The Engine will run on a “pay what you want” model, enabling developers access to the engine’s features and source code for a fee that they would like to pay, and with no obligation to pay royalties or additional service charges. Additionally, the new engine will also feature the Crytek marketplace which is designed to enable developers access to individual assets from Crytek’s own resources as well as thousands of materials, sounds, and 3D objects created by the CryEngine community and other trusted vendors.
