Cyberpunk 2077 Devs Believe in Its First-Person-Only Perspective

From the time that CD Projekt RED started revealing initial details on Cyberpunk 2077, it’s first-person perspective seemed a little bit odd for those who are not a fan of FPS games, especially considering that the Polish developer is taking on FPS for the first time ever. At first, the game was supposed to feature some third-person cut-scenes as well, allowing players to see themselves and enjoy their own customizations on V, but recently, CDPR informed the community that plans have been changed. Cyberpunk 2077 is no longer featuring third-person cut-scenes expect a small number of brief scenes where you can spot your character for a few seconds. For people like me who love FPS title, the news wasn’t a bad one, but for the rest of the community it seemed like a radical decision.

Responding to those who dislike the idea of being a fully first-person game, Max Pears, the level designer behind Cyberpunk 2077, made it clear that the choice is right and players will understand it when they play the game. Pears said:

I hope people understand that we have thought about this and there is logic to our process. We’ve not just thrown this in randomly: there is a lot of thought that’s gone into it.

In last year’s demo you saw the interactive dialogue system, where somebody pulled a gun on your face. I don’t think you would necessarily get that same impact in third-person. It’s moments like that which make it feel like it’s your story and your character.

There are clearly some people who are really strong and passionate [about this issue], but we believe that this is the right choice for this game.

Hopefully when people get the chance to experience it for themselves, they’ll understand why we’ve gone in that direction.

Despite the fact that CD Projekt RED has confirmed third-person cut-scenes will be less than before, Pears clarified that the scenes we saw in E3 2018 demo footage haven’t changed or removed.

Cyberpunk 2077 will be available next year on April 16 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Stadia and PC. Recently, the developer confirmed multiplayer part for the game as a post-launch content via hiring new specialists who are experienced in online games.
