The original Dark Souls is coming to Nintendo Switch, Nintendo and publisher Bandai Namco announced today. The remaster of the Dark Souls will be released for Nintendo’s portable console on May 25.
The first title in the genre-defining action role-playing franchise is coming to Nintendo Switch. The game includes the Artorias of the Abyss DLC, as well as improved framerate and resolution from the original Dark Souls game for an exhilarating return to Lordran. This marks the franchise’s debut on a Nintendo platform, and now for the first time ever, this revered (and challenging) game can be played on the go.
Dark Souls was first released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox One in 2011 to widespread acclaim. The game was later ported to Windows PC in 2012 as Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition. The most recent entry in the Dark Souls franchise, Dark Souls 3, came to consoles and PC in early 2016.

The PC, PS4, and Xbox One versions are said to be revealed some hours after the Switch. These ports are being developed by a different developer from the one working on the Switch port, but the studios’ names were not shared.
There aren’t that many technical details available yet, either, but the report mentioned upgraded textures, and “rebuilt lighting and SFX” based on Dark Souls 3 tech.
PvP and co-op is also getting an upgrade to six concurrent players. The remaster is pegged for a May release on all platforms, and the report added that Namco is also looking into bringing the two remaining Dark Souls games to Switch.
Dark Souls Remastered joins other surprising titles that have released on Nintendo’s platform, such as last year’s Doom and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim as well as the upcoming Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and Payday 2. And while it may not be exclusive, it joins the ever-expanding list of Nintendo Switch games coming in 2018.
