Scavengers Studio has announced that Darwin Project is now a free to play game in Steam Early Access. The game arrived on Steam Early Access in March and on XBox One Game Preview for $15. Since then, developers discovered that certain regions could not build a large enough player base to fill servers. As a result, the team decided to open up the game to “as many players as possible” according to the note posted on Steam.
Players who purchased the game will find several items in inventory by way of thanks for their faith in the game and there are signs that cosmetic items will soon arrive in some form of an in-game shop.
The developer specified that this move will be for the PC version of the game, and when asked by IGN of whether or not the Xbox One version of the game will also utilize a free-to-play structure, Scavenger Studio said that it will “have more to share about Darwin Project on Xbox One soon.”
For players that had previously purchased the game on PC, a number of in-game items will automatically be provided to players’ inventories on April 24th, 2018. Alongside that, a number of cosmetic items are also being introduced to the game, though the studio assured that “the vast majority” of them will be available through in-game progression, and that all of the new items are “purely aesthetic and 100% optional.”
Darwin Project is available now through Steam Early Access on PC, and is part of the Xbox Game Preview program on Xbox One.
“We’ve said from the start that we’re committed to creating a fresh and exciting experience for Darwin Project players and viewers. With features like the Show Director who serves as a master of ceremonies, Spectator Interactions that let viewers directly interact with streams, and an emphasis on tracking that ensures players are always within arm’s reach of a tense confrontation, we still believe Darwin Project offers a quality experience unlike any other battle royale game out there.
“We’ve been fortunate to have a core community of players join us at a very early stage, with many still supporting us during Early Access, and the last thing we want to do is let those passionate players down. Lately, members of our community have reported longer queue times and difficulty finding matches in lesser populated servers. To bring in new players and maintain a level of activity that ensures players are able to get the most of out Darwin Project, we’ve decided to make it more accessible by removing the price tag.
“We’re aware that it’s a big change, and we want to reiterate that we’re remaining true to Darwin Project’s vision as we move forward,”
