Coming out of the Summer Game Fest, Kojima’s post-apocalyptic, UPS simulating, fever dream Death Stranding was announced to be coming to PlayStation 5. Entitled Death Stranding: Director’s Cut, the first trailer paid homage to the series that took up the brunt of Hideo Kojima’s Career Metal Gear Solid with leading actor Norman Reedus using a box to hide, planning to sneak past enemies. Thanks to a new Trailer we now know when to expect it.
From there we have learned a lot more when it comes to what new content we can expect from the upcoming game. These features include the newly added jump ramp allowing players to get over large gaps with far more ease. A buddy bot will help to make delivering a large number of packages easier, and to make your journey slightly less lonely. There is also a firing range to test out your guns, which also has a Metal Gear Solid vibe.
The oddest new addition to the game, at least for me, was the new racing mini-game game called the Fragile Circut. It seems like there are multiple set courses that you can participate in 1v1 races around to break up the monotony of courier life.
Kojima-san, himself an avid film buff, has rejected the title given to the game believing it unfairly represents the content that is being added as having been previously cut which he assures is not the case. In the film, a director cut usually comes after the initial editing cut, and prior to a final cut. As such, in filmmaking, a director cut is usually restoring content that had been removed for whatever reason. In both the case of this game and another PlayStation game Ghost of Tsushima, the content being added is completely new and was worked on post-release.
As stated both in their latest trailer and on PlayStation Blog, Death Stranding: Director’s Cut will be released on September 24, 2021. If you already own the game on PlayStation 4 you can upgrade your version to the Director’s Cut for $10. This will include the digital deluxe content.
