The fourth major expansion to Destiny 2, entitled The Witch Queen, will be releasing on February 22, 2022. Bungie announced this release date, as well as showcasing new features, story content, and locations during a live stream hosted on their official twitch channel earlier today.
This expansion will follow guardians at the meet Savathun, who is the titular character of the expansion. Savathun is the sister of Oryx, who served as the villain in Destiny: The Taken King. The character has remained unseen, though has served as a key character behind the scenes in the game for years. The Witch Queen looks to draw back the curtain on her role in the series, though either she will be antagonistic toward the player, similar to her sister, remains to be seen.
The expansion will add a new world to the mix called Savathun’s Throneworld. This other dimension acts as Savathun’s ultimate backup plan. Inside this world, players will ultimately find the “truth” about the light and the darkness that has served as driving points for the series.
Weapon crafting will also be making an appearance in this expansion. While not much has been stated about the system it will allow players to craft their own. They will then be able to upgrade their guns and grow them over a period of time. A new energy weapon named the Glaive is also being added. It will be a long spear with a curved blade at the end, and the only first-person melee weapon in the game.
The Witch Queen was first announced last year during Destiny’s Showcase but was ultimately delayed into 2022. It will be available simultaneously for Google Stadia, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. All versions will feature cross-play and cross-save.
