announced today that DICE LA, co-developer of the upcoming multiplayer game Battlefield 2042, has been rebranded as Ripple Effect Studios. This is part of an effort for the company to forge its own identity outside of the primary DICE studio, located in Sweden.
As part of a blog post, Ripple Effect GM Christian Grass stated:
“We’re so proud of our work as DICE LA and the DICE team will forever be a part of our DNA, but over the past eight years, we’ve developed our own culture and our own way of doing things. We’re excited to look towards the future, expand the team and establish our own identity.”
This rebranding has been in the works for some time now. Respawn CEO Vince Zampella added the Dice LA studio head to his list of duties in 2020 and made clear at that time the studio would be undergoing some changes reflective of its role as a major studio and not simply support for their primary studio in Stockholm.
Zampella said of this “We want to give it a new image. We want people to say, ‘This is a destination you can go and make new content.'”. Their work on the upcoming Battlefield 2042 should help solidify this intention.
DICE LA was founded in 2013, consisting of several core staff who had previously worked on games on the Medal of Honor games, specifically at developer Danger Close. Since then the studio has been synonymous with the Battlefield franchise. Going forward the studio could branch out from that as part of their new identity though that remains to be seen.
Battlefield 2042 will release on October 22, for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC. It is being Co-developed by DICE and Ripple Effect Studios.
