Disney CEO Says There Is A ‘Good Relationship’ With EA

Disney CEO Says There Is A ‘Good Relationship’ With EA

According with Disney’s CEO Bob Iger, relations with EA are fine, he affirms that Disney is OK with the way EA’s is managing the Star Wars franchise of games, this confirmation come after the controversial decision to cancel project Orca, the project planned to be an open-world ambitious Star Wars game.

“Over the years, as you know, we’ve tried our hand at self-publishing, we’ve bought companies, we’ve sold companies, we’ve bought developers, we’ve closed developers,” Iger said. “And we’ve found over the years that we haven’t been particularly good at the self-publishing side, but we’ve been great at the licensing side which obviously doesn’t require that much allocation of capital.”

“Since we’re allocating capital in other directions … we’ve just decided that the best place for us to be in that space is licensing and not publishing. We’ve had good relationships with some of those we’re licensing to, notably EA and the relationship on the Star Wars properties, and we’re probably going to stay on that side of the business and put our capital elsewhere.”

While Disney and EA might be all right about how things are going I’m pretty sure that fans will think otherwise, recently Gary Whitta, the writer of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Gears Of War series shared his opinion about EA.

“I saw a bunch of that game and it looked terrific. After it was cancelled I saw some stuff, I saw what they had up that point, it was far from finished but it looked amazing, it would have been Star Wars Uncharted which I’m very excited about,” he said.

“My understanding is what they [EA] were saying all the way through is that we don’t want to make Star Wars Uncharted. Well, maybe don’t hire the narrative director of the Uncharted games to make it for you, and figure out what it is you actually want?”

“If I was an EA shareholder, I’d be f**king furious,” he added, “It has been catastrophically mismanaged.”

Project Orca was originally in the hands of Visceral Games under the code name Ragtag with the direction of Amy Hennig, but when EA closed the studio in 2017 EA Vancouver took over the task of continue the project and it was announced that they will be working on a Star Wars game under the code name Orca, they kept some of the assets and changed from a linear-action-adventure approach to an open world adventure game.
