Don’t Expect New PSVR Headset Anytime Soon

With the news of the next generation of PlayStation hardware making its rounds across the internet, many fans are wondering what’s next for the PlayStation brand of VR tech. While there’s certainly some issues to work out on the current model of the hardware, the next gen Sony console has already been confirmed to support the current PSVR headset.

With this bit of confirmed information, it seems likely that we’ll eventually receive a new PSVR headset, but we shouldn’t expect a new one anytime soon. Sony PlayStation’s Head of R&D, Dominic Mallinson, told CNET in an interview that they have plenty of new advances to make with the hardware, but want to refrain from overbearing consumers with a load of new tech to purchase at once.

“There’s no reason for us to coincide it with a new console(…)From the point of view of the consumer, to be bombarded with many, many things – oh, you have to buy this, you have to buy that – is a message that we don’t want to send. In some ways, it’s good to have a little breathing space between those things.” – Dominic Mallinson

So, while we’ve had plenty of new PSVR related patents surface and there’s plenty of demand for fewer wires and eye-tracking tech, the future of the PSVR headset seems to stick with the current model for the foreseeable future. After all, having the current hardware compatible with the next gen console seems like solid evidence of that.
