Last week the team behind Far Cry 6 finally got to show players the first major look at the island of Yara. With lush landscapes, time-locked cities, and a bizarre yet wonderful assortment of weapons I think we are in for a good time. However, fans of a long-running component in the series might not be happy with some of the changes.
Several members of the development team recently took to Reddit to host an AMA for the game. Among the many things revealed during the panel was that the arcade mode, which was introduced for Far Cry 5, and the map editor, appearing in multiple entries, would not be present.
Alexandre Letendre, game director, stated:
“Removing this mode from our plan was a difficult decision, but allowed us to focus our efforts on the main campaign, transporting players into the heart of a modern-day guerrilla revolution.”
It was also clarified that there were no plans to bring it to the game later on.
Another element changing from Far Cry 5 is the companion system. While the fangs for hire return, being showcased primarily through the paraplegic Weiner dog Chorizo. While multiple animals including a crocodile ( or alligator, I’m not good with these), your companions will be limited to animals. You will be able to join NPCs in combat but they will not be linked to your character
Another featured that will not return is the weapon tier system from Far Cry: New Dawn. Many players had assumed the semi-loot mechanic was being tested for a wider addition into the game. This was widely seen as Ubisoft attempting to insert RPG mechanics into the franchise, similar to Assassins Creed. That still could have been the case at the time but for now, it seems the concept will be ditched in favor of the traditional gun scheme.
What players can expect to make a return are the Wingsuit and grappling hooks. These have offered more range and movement in past games, but with the metropolitan areas of Yara, you can expect them to be more diverse in use than ever. The city elements also bring the new inclusion of a holster, allowing a player to hide their weapon as they explore. Since your character is local, blending in has a large emphasis placed upon it.
Far Cry 6 releases to PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Stadia, and Luna on October 7th.
