The first State of Play of the year that Sony will be holding is set for February 2nd and will primarily showcase the upcoming Gran Turismo 7 which is set to launch on March 4th, 2022. The footage that will be showcased will be running on the PlayStation 5 system. This news was announced via the PlayStation Blog.
While not the first time Gran Turismo 7 has been showcased, this will offer the deepest look at gameplay yet, with most trailers choosing to focus heavily on the hyper-realism of the cars. The franchise has managed to maintain a passionate fanbase through the years despite some missteps, with the newest game looking to blend popular modes from throughout the franchise’s history to build upon itself.
Gran Turismo 7 is being developed by Polyphony Digital and being directed by professional racer Kazunori Yamauchi. The last title released in the series, Gran Turismo Sport took an eSports approach to the franchise, which did well with racing sim fans though alienated some of its casual fanbases.
Previously it was rumored that we could expect the State of Play in February, though this is far different than what many suggested we might see. The PSVR2 was announced right before rumors began to circulate with many believing this might be our first chance to see what Sony planned for their new headset. Sony had also made plenty of studio acquisitions across 2021, with this seeming like a perfect opportunity to showcase new projects.
While nothing other than Gran Turismo 7 has been advertised it is possible we could see more during the State of Play. Usually, the events last 45 minutes, leaving 15 minutes or so possibly to be dedicated to other games, though there is no way to be sure until we see it. The State of Play can be watched on Twitch or YouTube starting 2pm Pacific / 5pm Eastern / 11:00pm CET.
