Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles is coming to the Switch and PS4

Square Enix has announced it is remastering Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, and it will launch in 2019. A short trailer for the game made its debut at the PlayStation Lineup Tour, a pre-Tokyo Game Show event, and teases the return of the multiplayer RPG.

Players must fight enemies and solve puzzles as they travel to gather magical fuel for crystals that protect towns from the dangerous Miasma.

The original version of Crystal Chronicles, which holds an 80 rating on Metacritic, was released for the Nintendo GameCube in 2003, and its four-player mode required the use of up to three Game Boy Advances connected to the console.

The Crystal Chronicles remaster will support a more traditional online co-op judging by the preview trailer. So, players who only managed to play Crystal Chronicles solo, or with another player can maybe get a chance to experience it in its full glory.

All the menus and actions for your character were displayed on the portable system’s screen, including a map that only gave limited information to each player. This meant that verbal communication between all the players was crucial if you wanted to get anywhere or work together with your spells. It was a beautiful, complicated and expensive mess to play in the way it was intended. It was also worth it, as anyone who put together a crew with all the proper hardware will tell you.

The implementation of the original multiplayer makes sense on the Nintendo Switch, but we’ll have to wait and see how the PlayStation 4 version will attempt to emulate it … or if that version of the game will have more traditional multiplayer. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition is coming to Japan in 2019, and there is not yet official word on an international release.
