was the first mainline game in the series to actually get a sequel. While the game changed a lot of elements from the first game for better or worse, it is still a beloved game for many Final Fantasy fans, especially those that were introduced to the series with X. While the idea that a sequel to the game could happen, years passed and we saw nada. Well today, we are one tiny, microscopic step closer to it becoming a reality.
According to developer Tetsuya Nomura, the plot for a Final Fantasy X-3 is written, but due to other priorities in the company, we will have to wait for a while more. These comments were made in an interview conducted by Famitsu featuring Nomura and Final Fantasy X director Motomu Toriyama.
In the interview, it was stated that:
“If we are to make 10-3, we somehow have a synopsis written by [Final Fantasy X writer Kazushige Nojima]. It’s sleeping right now, but the plot itself does exist.”
Toriyama expanded on this, expressing his desire to return to the franchise, but noting the current issues:
“The probability is not zero. we are not in a phase where we can talk about it unless we have finished producing FF7 Remake.”
Since we have only seen the release of one of the multi-part Final Fantasy VII Remake, and there are at least two more coming, it looks like there will be a decent wait before we return to the world of Spira. A positive takeaway from this is that the popularity of the VII Remake may open the door to more expansions to other Final Fantasy games.
Tetsuya Nomura had previously worked as a character designer for the game when that was what he was most known for, which is why he might also have a vested interest in seeing this game made. Final Fantasy X is one of the most popular games in the series, frequently topping fan charts in Japan.
