Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier affirms that Final Fantasy XVI has been in development for quite some time, the JRPG may be launching sooner than expected.
“I’ve heard from people who are familiar with the game’s development that it’s actually been in development for at least four years in some capacity, so it’s coming sooner than people think” affirms Schreier who is a respected insider in the industry.
Certainly, Schreier’s information seems accurate considering the game’s announcement trailer which showcased gameplay footage and teased a very polished product. It’s also important to mention that it’s unclear how ambitious is the project, it’s unclear if Square Enix will launch the game on episodic releases or if they will opt for a more traditional launch.
Square Enix confirmed that the next information reveal will happen in 2021, the developer “expect everyone to have fun speculating”.
As seen on the announcement trailer, Final Fantasy XVI seems to take place over several decades, following the story of the main character as he grows from a small boy to a grown man. The game features a medieval aesthetic, unlike FFXIII and FFXV. The gameplay also seems to be more based on action and real-time combat.

The exclusive footage, comprised of both battles and cutscenes running in real-time, represents but a fraction of what our team has accomplished since the start of development on this, an all-new Final Fantasy game. In that span, the team’s size has grown from a handful of core members to a full-fledged unit that continues to polish and build upon what they have created so far, all to provide players an experience unmatched in terms of story and gameplay.
