Firaxis Marvel Game Uses No Existing Heroes – Rumor

There has been a lot of chatter that 2K is set to announce a game by the end of this month. While not officially the game that will be announced, assumably at Gamescom, suggestions have claimed that a Marvel Game, developed by XCOM developer Firaxis is the furthest along and most likely the next game they will announce.

During a recent live stream for Giant Bomb, industry insider Jeff Grubb discussed the Marvel game. The stream in question is locked behind a payway, but the information has managed to escape into the ether as information is want to do.

Disclaimer – This information has not been verified, therefore this is not factual.

First off Jeff Grubb stated that the game will be most likely showcased during Gamescom later this month. While a recent rumor suggested the game would be announced this month, with Gamescom occurring during the final week of August it has been safe to assume this was when we could most likely expect this announcement.

The biggest news Jeff Grubb stated about the game was what players can expect from it. As prior rumors that both Jason Schreier and Jeff Grubb had confirmed, the game will play extremely similar to XCOM with Marvel heroes standing in for the soldiers. Each character would move in a tactical RPG style, with each getting a special move and individual powers.

However, up until this point, the suggestion seemed to point to the game being similar to Avengers-style team-ups that pits a broad number of Marvels superheroes against a common enemy. As Jeff Grubb suggests, that is in actuality, not the case, as it turns out characters will work similarly to XCOM as well.

According to him, the game will feature customizable heroes, and that existing heroes will not be appearing in the game at all. As Jeff Grubb stated during his podcast:

The reason that it might still be [considered] a new property even though it’s a Marvel thing is that… this is not going to pick up any existing franchise in the [Marvel Cinematic Universe], it’s not even going to be existing characters. So it’s not going to have any existing MCU characters, but it should take place in the wider universe.

He went on to say that it will revolve around magic in the universe and the singles out Blade as the game will have vampires in it. Blade is not the only character that could work for this as the X-Men portion of the universe could offer hundreds of combinations for characters with no existing characters being used. Inhumans could also work well in this context.

Jeff Grubb went on to say:

I do think that the character that you’re playing will be a customisable superhero, or at least the team might be customisable, so it’s still going to have XCOM in that way, but that’s why it’s not going to be taking place in any existing lineage of franchises. So I guess they might consider this a new property.

Being a fan of XCOM I am excited to see how this choice will affect the overarching game if this turns out to be true. That being said, it will be weird to not see characters you are familiar with appearing in a Marvel universe game.
