Up to this point, there have been several suggestions that Eric Baptizat, former director of Assassins Creed Valhalla, was in some way being tapped for the upcoming Dead Space Remake. However, similar to Dead Space itself at the time, these were simply rumors with no official backing behind them. Thanks to a new update to his Linkedin update, we now have confirmation for his role.
Baptizat, up to this point, had put in 16 years had Ubisoft before leaving to work at EA Motive to Direct the upcoming remake. During his time at Ubisoft, he acted as Game Director for Assassins Creed Valhalla though he has worked on the franchise long before that. He also severed Lead Designer on Origins, Black Flag, as well as Unity. He is not alone in switching from Ubisoft to EA either as Watch Dog Legion’s Philippe Ducharme and For Honor’s Roman Campos-Oriola will also join the project.
The team will also boast several Bioware vets as well as several developers that have previously worked on the original Dead Space. Ducharme and Campos-Oriola recently discussed with IGN what gamers can expect from the remake, and how they are rebuilding certain aspects of the game. They stated:
We started with the original level design of the original Dead Space. What’s funny is that you can see some of the iterations that were made prior to ship by the team. In the first chapter, you can see some corridors that they wanted to do first in a certain way, and then you can understand why they changed it for technical constraints or [some other reason]. Then, in terms of visuals, sound, gameplay, everything, we are rebuilding all of these assets. We are not porting them; it’s not uprezzing the texture or adding more polygons to the model. It’s really rebuilding all these elements, shooting all the animations, et cetera.
Similar to other remakes, the pair also talked about noticing plot holes going from the first title to the second. Knowing where the franchise is going, the team will be working to fill these and create a more cohesive flow from the remake to where Dead Space 2 begins.
