Free-To-Play Model May Release Alongside Call Of Duty 2019

A recent rumor from Kotaku has spread like wildfire which claims the current cycle of Call of Duty developers may be interrupted due to internal dispute, making Black Ops 5 the 2020 release in the series. However, we’ve still yet to receive official confirmation regarding this year’s Call of Duty iteration, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t learned some interesting information about the upcoming annual shooter.

Within the report, the source also states that Black Ops 4 didn’t exactly meet expectations and that Activision executives were looking into including a free-to-play model for the 2019 release – presumably Modern Warfare 4.

While there’s a number of reasons as to why Black Ops 4 under-performed compared to previous entries, most notable reasons would be the exclusion of the traditional single player campaign and a considerably higher entry fee for their battle royale mode when compared to other popular titles in the genre, such as Fortnite and Apex Legends – both of which are free-to-play.

We still have yet to receive confirmation that Modern Warfare 4 is indeed the next in-line for the Call of Duty franchise, all signs seem to be pointing in that direction. We should learn a lot more within the next month during the Call of Duty Coliseum event at this year’s E3 event.
