Earlier this year we received a bit of a surprise rumor that swirled around Song of Fire and Ice author George R.R. Martin and the potential of working with Soulsborne and Sekiro developers FromSoftware. The rumor went on to describe an in-development title that took players through multiple kingdoms in an open-world setting allowing players to be granted special abilities upon defeating the leader of each kingdom.
To add to the anticipation, it was rumored Martin was working alongside the developers for this game which left many fans eagerly awaiting more details. While we’ve still yet to have official confirmation regarding not only this title, but Martin’s whereabouts with FromSoftware, the author let a tidbit of information leak in a blog post on the ending of HBO’s Game of Thrones series.
After stating that he’s still rather busy with a flurry of upcoming projects – including his long-awaited books – Martin also expressed, “I’ve consulted on a video game out of Japan.” What this means is that he’s merely discussed a potential opportunity with a Japanese video game developer, but it happens to come at a time when fans are clamoring for more details on a supposed rumor surrounding both Martin and the Japanese video game developer FromSoftware.
Adding a bit of kindle to the flame is a bit more information scrounged up by Gematsu which has claimed to talk with an internal source with FromSoftware, stating that both the open-world “kingdoms” title has been in development for three years, is being collaborated on with Martin and Soulsborne/Sekiro creator Hidetaka Miyazaki, published by Bandai Namco and will be officially announced during Microsoft’s E3 panel next month. The game is also said to go by the code-named acronym of “GR”.
As for now, that’s the bulk of the details that we know regarding a potential collaboration between George R.R. Martin and this “consulted” Japanese video game developer. Whether or not it’s FromSoftware remains to be seen, but if the source who spoke with Gematsu is to be believe, we should be hearing more on the topic relatively soon. Stay tuned.
