In a PlayStation Blog post, Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s cut was given more details including what players can expect to find when they travel to the island of Iki, when the expansion drops alongside the upgraded version in August. As Senior Writer for Sucker Punch Productions, Patrick Downs points out, it has been a hell of a year for the team that released the game while members were quarantined at home.
He goes on to describe the events that will ultimately bring protagonist Jin to Iki Island:
Jin’s journey begins when he discovers that a mysterious Mongol tribe has gained a foothold on Iki. They are led by a revered shaman called Ankhsar Khatun, known to her followers as “the Eagle.” As both a khatun and a shaman, she is not only a conqueror of nations, but a shepherd of souls. And the danger she presents to Jin and his people is unlike any they have faced.
The only way to counter this threat is for Jin to return to Iki Island. He’s been there once before. And in confronting a new and dangerous enemy, he will be forced to face old fears, and unearth deeply buried traumas. As you explore a new island and battle new threats, you’ll also delve into the dark past of clan Sakai…
Unlike the main map, this island is not under the control of the Samurai. It is described as “a wild, lawless land of raiders and criminals” and “scarred by memories of war”. Since allowing the Mongol army to gain control of the island would have grave consequences for Japan, gaining the support of the islanders in his quest to defeat the Eagle is a must.
The game will also tell, as it is described, a “story of healing,” which he described as important to the team after the events of the last year. This will narratives exploring characters affected by the war raging between the Samurai and Mongol armies. We can also expect a more personal look into the past of Jin Sakai himself.
The Iki Island story expansion will be available as part of the Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut, which will be available on August 20. If you already own the game on PlayStation 4, there will be multiple upgrade options to move the game to PlayStation 5, or to get the new content on PlayStation 4 without rebuying the game.
