Today’s PlayStation showcase was not short of surprises and gameplay trailers, but it’s fair to affirm that the best surprise was saved for last. God of War: Ragnarok will follow the events of the acclaimed reboot of the franchise. Those who are familiar with the franchise will know that the event was actually expected to happen earlier.
The sequel of God of War was rumored and expected to be revealed in today’s showcase. The teasing of the new game began on a 2019 dynamic trailer in which is teased “Ragnarok is coming.”
This week, God of War creative director, Cory Barlog posted a cryptic message on Twitter that suggested the reveal of a new God of War game. Barlog changed his profile picture with a grey ice image, his banner image also was updated with several lines of Latin text.
As noted by Eurogamer‘s Zoe Delahunty-Light, the new God of War is a representation of Jörmungandr, the World Serpent. Something that will be familiar to players of the first game. Jörmungandr comes from Norse mythology and could suggest more of what’s to come in God of War: Ragnarok.
Jörmungandr is one of the signs for the coming of Ragnarok, the prophecy claims that once the serpent grows so large to surround the Earth and grasp its own tail the release of it will mark the arrival of Ragnarok. In Norse mythology, Thor is the arch-enemy of Jörmungandr.
