God of War Sequel Delayed into 2022

If you were expecting to get your hands on the next God of War game this year it would appear that will not be the case. Studio Santa Monica took to Twitter today to share the news while also thanking fans for their support.

According to the tweet, the release window has shifted to sometime in 2022. Like most people over the last year they “Remain focused on delivering a top quality game while maintaining the safety and wellbeing of our team”. It would make sense that development has been delayed by the global pandemic.

The game was initially announced at the end of last year. The teaser, which promised us that “Ragnarök is coming”, ended on the year 2021. It would seem based on their statement that this was indeed intended as the release window. While no official title has been given fans have taken to calling it God of War: Ragnarök. Plenty of gamers felt that a 2021 release window was overly ambitious.

Ragnarök was hinted at during the first game. It also made sense that the end of the gods would eventually factor into the franchise, seeing how Kratos loves to end gods. Outside of these assumptions we have yet to see what the cataclysmic event will mean for Kratos.

Studio Santa Monica is also currently in the process of hiring. While there has been no official statement as to what projects they are hiring for it is not uncommon bolster a team after a significant delay.

Since Sony will be skipping E3 again this year there is no clear date as to when more information will be available. Similar to The Last of Us Part 2 and Horizon: Forbidden west, there will most likely be a State of Play dedicated to it in the near future.
