After an excruciating wait from its first announced last year, the upcoming God of War game for the PlayStation 5 finally got a gameplay trailer showing off what gamers can expect next for Kratos and his son Atreus. This trailer also officially confirms the title of the game as God of War: Ragnarok, which had been what fans had referred to it as though was not finalized in-house at the time.
The trailer opens up on Kratos and his son in a cave as his son fetches them an elk for their dinner. The snow that is pouring into the cave is then confirmed by Atreus to be Fimbulwinter, the “great winter” that directly preludes the events of Ragnarok. From there we are offered several story beats as we see plenty of returning characters. Atreus also takes the voice of reason in this narrative, hoping to save people.
However, the story takes an interesting turn when it seems that a major narrative plot is for Kratos to locate Tyr, the Norse god of war. We are offered a glimpse of what a buddy cop drama starring the two gods of war could look like near the end of the trailer.
Gameplay segments are also shown during this trailer. One of the most interesting moments comes in the form of Kratos riding a sled pulled by two wolves across the frozen lake of nine where much of the first game was centered around.
From there we are treated to a bevy of the hack n’ slash action we are already familiar with from the series. It appears he will have some new additional powers but will mostly rely on his Leviatan Axe and his Blades of Choas to tear his enemies apart no matter how big they are.
The one thing lacking from the show was a firm release date. While we cannot say when exactly the game will arrive, it is slated for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 at some point in 2022.
