The first ever PS5 game got announced last night at the 2019 Game Awards. Godfall, a third person “looter-slasher,” will be coming out in the holiday season of 2020. It is unclear if this game will be a PS5 launch title, but it will be exclusive to PS5 and the Epic Games Store.
The game itself is being developed by Counterplay Games who have only made one game previous to this called Duelyst, which was a free-to-play, turn-based card game. Godfall is being published by Gearbox who have had a hand in the original Half-Life and, of course, the Borderlands Series.
Even though the term “looter-slasher” is getting thrown around a lot ever since the game’s announcement, it’s still unclear what that is going to entail. People online have been trying to compare it to games such as Destiny, Diablo, and Warframe. While the genre may remain unknown until gameplay is shown, the developer labels it as “a loot-driven action RPG with third-person real-time melee combat” on their website.
The creative director, Keith Lee, did have this to say about the gameplay, however:
“We’re innovating with Godfall to provide a fresh take on action RPGs by rewarding skill-based offensive gameplay and making every hit matter. Namely, we want to feed into that yearning for the next best piece in your character build, so we plan to provide plenty of loot to players to ensure there’s meaningful impact to gameplay and playstyles.”
Style-wise, Godfall shares a lot of similarities with games like Darksiders and Infinity Blade. The game will focus on the use melee weaponry as well as magic in a medieval/fantasy world. The one thing that stands out in the trailer is the modern looking tower at the end that appears to run on some kind of technology, so there will be more to this game than a typical classic knight setting.
The final important thing to note is that the game can run in either solo mode or multiplayer with two to three people online. With drop-in/drop-out co-op, there is a seamless transition between playing the game alone and playing it with friends.
Godfall is set to be one of the most anticipated games of 2020, especially if it ends up being a launch title for the PS5. Only time will tell if it will live up to expectations.
