Polyphony Digital’s Kazunori Yamauchi affirms that Gran Turismo 7 will be a classic Gran Turismo and be less like Gran Turismo Sports.
In a recent interview with a Japanese magazine, the head of PlayStation Studio’s Polyphony Digital confirmed that the game “will return to royal purpose of full volumes like Gran Turismo 1-4, and provide the best Gran Turismo experience at present.”
“We see Gran Turismo as an avant-garde title, and have consciously incorporated new challenges with each change of generation,” Yamauchi said. “That’s why each series has its own fans, but sometimes the changes come to users as a surprise.
For example, with Gran Turismo Sport, which is available now, we took on a full-scale eSports challenge as our first online-dedicated title, but some people may have considered this bizarre. We acquired 9.5 million users as a result, but it didn’t sell like crazy from the beginning—more like appreciation gradually grew and support increased over the course of three years.”
As the name implies, Gran Turismo Sports, was the first game in the racing sim franchise to be completely designed for being an esports title, the game was met with mixed reviews by both fans and the critic, the main problem in GT Sports was the lack of a simulation mode, something that was later added via a free DLC.
Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo Sports features a unique racing experience at the expense of the feel of a classic GT title, the long hours of grinding for winning a championship, to earn credits to finely tune your dream car is something that the studio missed since Gran Turismo 6.
As revealed in The Future of Gaming, Gran Turismo 7 will bring classic tracks back, tuning shops, and hopefully a repertory of regular, non-exotic cars to race. The game is expected to be “a combination of the past, present, and future – a complete form of Gran Turismo.”
