Grand Theft Auto: Remastered Trilogy In Development – Rumor

According to Kotaku, though sources close to the project, a Grand Theft Auto: Remastered Trilogy is currently in development for all systems, including the Nintendo Switch. This is not to be confused with the ported trilogy of the games already on most modern systems.

For the past year, both Twitter and Reddit have been buzzing with the possibility that the PlayStation 2-era GTA games would be seeing a remaster. This only intensified when parent company Take-Two Interactive began filing DMCA take-down strikes against mods for the classic games. On top of that, the company had stated three remasters or remakes were in development.

While the games being remastered at this time cannot be confirmed at this time, sources told Kotaku that Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto San Andreas were all in the final stages of being remastered. The games are being remastered using the Unreal Engine and are set to feature both new and old graphics.

According to a source that saw a snippet of gameplay, it was described as looking like a heavily modded classic GTA game. The UI for the games is also being updated (GTA III could definitely use it) however the games are being designed to play as close to their PS2-era counterparts as possible.

Rockstar Dundee, one of the newest studios under the Rockstar banner, is the team in charge of these remastered versions of the games. Not only are they involved with the remasters but sources close also state that Dundee is helping to port Grand Theft Auto V to the next generation consoles.

Kotaku’s report goes on to outline how plans for the games have shifted over the course of the last year, in part due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Originally the games were supposed to be shipped as part of the Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online as part of what the company called a “Thank you gift” to fans. This plan has now been scrapped with the games intended for release earlier this year. The plan was again changed, now targeting a release in October or November.

The trilogy is planned to release for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, PC, Stadia, and mobile phones so gamers should have a pretty easy time finding a place to play it. The PC port and the Mobile port have been rumored to sleep into next year as the current focus seems to be on the console port for right now.

While some might have expected these games to be spaced out similar to how the Yakuza Remastered Collection was it appears that will not be the case. As it stands currently all three games are planned for one release as a bundle that may only be sold digitally.
