During the Facebook Connect 2021 event, Mark Zuckerberg announced that Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the largest on the classic PlayStation 2 era Grand Theft Auto‘s, will be getting a redesign for VR and coming to the Oculus Quest 2. Resident Evil 4, also recently got the VR treatment for the Oculus Quest 2 receiving positive reviews for the rework.
Nothing else was shown or mentioned for the game during this event. There has been no price point, no release date, and not even a small look at how the game might play. A blog post that was posted on the Oculus website stated that “This is a project many years in the making, and we can’t wait to show you more of it.”
This announcement comes alongside the classic trilogy from the PlayStation 2 and OG Xbox era called The Definitive Editions, which are getting remasters using the Unreal 4 engine. Those games are set to release on November 11 for the digital versions with a physical version set to release on December 7. These versions, which are replacing the remastered versions that were already in the PlayStation Store and Xbox Marketplace, remain mostly the same except for a graphical polish to upgrade them.
There is no word if the VR version of San Andreas will use The Definitive Edition of the game, or the original version. Given that this announcement so closely followed the new versions being announced I would imagine that the plan is to use the new assets for the game, but hopefully, they will not forget the former.
In other news, Quest 2 owner Facebook announced that it would be adopting a new corporate name to encompass its multimedia. This name was announced as Meta, which includes abandoning the Oculus name in favor of the Meta Quest 2 branding. It will also no longer require a Facebook account to log into the device.
