Earlier this year EA announced that they would be purchasing CodeMasters, the talented team behind racing games like Dirt and F1. Already this purchase seems to be paying off as today during EA Play the studio announced their newest game Grid: Legends, the latest game from the studio’s Grid Series.
The trailer itself actually offers something players might not have expected, a deep story mode. Ncuti Gatwa, best known as Eric Effiong on Netflix’s comedy-drama Sex Education, starred in the trailer as a racer attempting to win the Grid World Series. The game will feature the same extended-reality techniques used to create the world in the Mandalorian to help bring this racing story to life. Alongside Effiong, two other racers will also be playable, each competing for the same title.
Becky Crossdale, Codemasters’ senior designer explained during her time on the EA Play stage that “We are giving you a classic underdog tale. We will put you straight into the driver’s seat, right in the middle of the Grid World Series.”
Fans of racing games can also expect the usual staples from Racing games to appear in full force as well. That is to say that the cars look beautiful and fast, and the stages consist of iconic locations like London and Moscow.
One of the biggest changes in this game is that some races are multiclassification. During the trailer, we also saw several races featuring say a big rig racing against a traditional racing car. How this will change gameplay, and how often these races come into play remains to be seen.
Crossdale stated “[The actors] are stepping into our Grid world and reacting with it.” While CodeMasters is well known for constantly improving on their formula and this time around they really look like they are taking full advantage of what EA has to offer the studio. Grid: Legends is slated for release in 2022.
