Valve confirmed via Twitter and new interview transcripts that Half-Life: Alyx will be the company’s new flagship VR game.
According to a tweet, the game will be unveiled this Thursday (November 21, 2019) at 10 AM Pacific Time. The tweet came from a new Valve Twitter account created in June 2019 and is the account’s first post. Moreover, the official Steam Twitter feed’s following dwarfs that of the company’s newest Twitter account.
Half-Life is a series of first-person shooter games developed and published by Valve. The first installment, Half-Life, released on November 19, 1998 for Windows and was later ported to PlayStation 2 in 2001 by Sierra Studios. Half-Life 2 launched on November 16, 2004 after six years of development and is set 20 years after the original game.
On October 27, 2005, Valve released Half-Life 2: Lost Cost, which demonstrated HDR rendering and consisted of only one map in which players climb a cliff to destroy an artillery launcher.
Half-Life: Alyx will be the first release in the franchise since Half-Life 2: Episode Two was released for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 on October 10, 2007 as part of The Orange Box. The Orange Box also included the games Portal, Team Fortress 2, Half-Life 2, and Half-Life 2: Episode One and was distributed by Electronic Arts.
Valve is also the company behind the Steam distribution platform on PC. The software was launched in September 2003 after having been announced in 2002. Since its inception, Steam has become one of the primary distribution channels for digital PC games, with over 150 million registered accounts in January 2018.
In addition, Valve developed Steam VR to support the HTC Vive, the VR headset.
No further information regarding the franchise’s newest installment has been released, but more should be revealed during the game’s unveiling on Thursday, November 21, 2019.
