Senua is a Celtic Warrior who journeys into the Viking heartland while struggling with trauma and psychosis. The psychological, emotional, and mental trials of her quest are portrayed in both her character model and her representation of reality. You’ll see this in the voices that Senua hears in the trailer, which were recorded binaurally (listen to them with headphones and they’ll sound as if they are in the 3D space around you).
Tameem Antoniades, Ninja Theory’s chief creative officer, presented the trailer during Epic Games’ “State of Unreal” talk at GDC 2016 today. In the middle of the trailer, a picture-in-picture window popped up to reveal that it wasn’t a trailer at all — Senua’s facial animations in the video were being generated from a live performance on stage by actress Melina Juergens, which was being captured in real time and streamed into Unreal Engine 4.
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is in development on PlayStation 4 and Windows PC, and is set for release later this year.
Check out the Trailer:
“Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is our first independently developed and self-published title. We have a small team of 16 people creating the game, but we believe that independence has given us the freedom to try to push our creative ideas and technology further than we ever have before.”
