Announced at the Video Game Awards back in 2017, Bayonetta 3 was poised to become the next big action game to shoot its way onto the Nintendo Switch. Several years later however we are still waiting to play it, with nothing more than its original teaser trailer to go by. PlatinumGames and series creator Hideki Kamiya have continually stated that it is still in development but with the game getting zero presence it is hard to take these statements on faith.
As it turns out, Kamiya is now stating that they would actually like to show more of the upcoming action game, but the decision does not rest with him or even PlatinumGames. Earlier this year he teased that information would be coming soon which lead people to speculate we would finally see it at E3. This of course was not the case and we are now nearing the end of this year with nary a word.
Speaking with VGC, Kamiya was asked about his statement earlier this year. He stated to them:
It was more of a not definitely ‘something will come out this year’, but if there is a year, then something should happen, right? If you remember last time, I said that even though everyone was asking about Bayonetta 3, maybe you should tell everyone to forget about it for a while. I kind of need to keep to that stance for now because ultimately, it’s not our decision what to say and when to say it.
Of course, this statement doesn’t help much as he seems to backtrack on his comments. However, in the end, he makes explicitly clear he has very little said over this decision. PlatinumGames‘ studio head Atsushi Inaba in a similar interview with VGC stated that “There’s no need to worry. Don’t worry about it at this time. Everything’s OK.” Of course, I wasn’t worried until he told me not to worry and now all I can do is worry.
Kamiya continued, stating he knows how excited fans are to finally see the game in action. He also made it sound like everybody involved at the studio wants to showcase it in some capacity. As it stands though, the lack of a major reveals seems to be on Nintendo’s end. He stated:
As much as everyone is clamouring to see it, we are really, really waiting to release it too. Everyone who is working on the project is of course very proud of what we’re doing and wants everyone to see what we’re doing. As much as fans are waiting for it, we are waiting for the day when we can show it. We want everyone to cheer us on as we run to the final stretch. We want to show it too!
Hopefully, Kamiya and his team get to show off the next adventure for everybody’s favorite Umbra Witch soon. For now, we will just need to trust that they are moving full steam ahead to get Bayonetta finished.
