Insights Video on Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

John Warner, Creative Director of Over The Moon has launched the third episode in their series of Developer Insight videos, analysing well crafted concepts from titles the developer admires. This time Warner focuses his attention on Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and how it creates compelling drama. Can video games be as meaningful as film? How should developers manage that? Should games even have stories?

Before we can have that conversation, Warner argues, game developers need to know what level of depth we’re targeting, and that means looking at traditionally structured drama, as it’s one of the oldest and richest examples of artistic expression. In the games industry, that means Naughty Dog. In this episode, John unpacks some of the complex themes and ideas buried within the outlandish escapades of Nathan, Elena, Sully, and Sam. Game developers have a lot to learn from the great writers at Naughty Dog, and Warner hopes to apply the lessons learned from their refined narratives toward The Fall Part 2: Unbound, due to launch February 13th on PC, Mac, Linux, Playstation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
