Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan said in an interview with Famitsu that the PS5 Haptic Controller will cause PlayStation fans to “feel a great evolution as a gaming experience.”
“I actually tried it myself,” said Ryan, “in a test version of Gran Turismo Sport. I was very surprised by the gameplay feel that was very different compared to the current DualShock 4.”
Ryan first spoke about the Haptic Controller in a blog post back in October of 2019. In the blog, Ryan explained that the controller has two key innovations: “We’re adopting haptic feedback to replace the ‘rumble’ technology found in controllers since the 5th generation of consoles. With haptics, you truly feel a broader range of feedback, so crashing into a wall in a race car feels much different than making a tackle on the football field. You can even get a sense for a variety of textures when running through fields of grass or plodding through mud.”
The second innovation comes in the form of what Sony Interactive Entertainment is calling “adaptive triggers.” Ryan explained, “[Adaptive triggers] have been incorporated into the trigger buttons (L2/R2). Developers can program the resistance of the triggers so that you feel the tactile sensation of drawing a bow and arrow or accelerating an off-road vehicle through rocky terrain. In combination with the haptics, this can produce a powerful experience that better simulates various actions.”
The PlayStation 5 is scheduled to release in Holiday 2020 and will be shipped with the brand-new Haptic Controller, replacing the DualShock experience to which fans of the console franchise have become accustomed.
