After a successful Kickstarter campaign raising over $150,000, NeocoreGames announces King Arthur: Knight’s Tale is coming to Steam Early Access January 12, 2021. The role-playing tactical game is meant to be “a unique hybrid between turn-based tactical games (like X-com) and traditional, character-centric RPGs.” according to the developers on Kickstarter. The game is explained as a retelling of the Knights of the Round Table lore. The player takes the perspective of Sir Mordred, King Arthur’s sworn enemy. The Lady of the Lake brings Sir Mordred back from the dead to finish what he started; Kill King Arthur. However, the developers go on to say “Now the choice is yours: will you become the savior or the dreadful monarch of this accursed realm?” The announcement trailer shows in-game combat akin to Divinity: Original Sin; fighting against ironclad soldiers and other worldly monsters, alike. The player will be able to customize the over thirty available heroes fighting alongside Sir Mordred with weapons, gear, and stats. Choose carefully, for teams are relegated to four heroes. The trailer also shows systems for ruling over Sir Mordred’s kingdom, where the player can presumably rest and get treatment for injuries sustained in battle. Amenities were shown in the kingdom including a temple, where the player can place heroes with diseases or wounds, similar to Darkest Dungeon. In the same regard, knights sent out on missions have a chance of failing and permanently dying. The website says actions and decisions made throughout the campaign will have ramifications that ripple through the narrative, as in similar role-playing games NeocoreGames wants to be synonymous with.
