Koei Tecmo Is The New Victim of Cyber-Attacks

According to reports from the Japanese outlet Famitsu, Koei Tecmo Europe has been the target of a new cyber-attack. This has prompted the large developer to shutdown the official website of Koei Tecmo Europe and America.

According to the press release released yesterday December 29, there is a risk that the login information from 65,000 users of Koei Tecmo Europe’s forum has been leaked. The cyberattack may have started on December 25.

“Koei Tecmo apologies for the concern and inconvenience this may be causing to its customers and business partners,” the publisher wrote in its press release. “For individuals who have had their e-mail addresses leaked, Koei Tecmo is determined to take the appropriate measures and act in good faith hereafter.”

The press release mentions specifically what’s at risk for the regular user of the forums:
-Account names
-Account passwords (in an encrypted state)
-Mail addresses

More information could’ve leaked online, however, the press release informs that according to the result of investigations, there is no credit card information, or any kind of critical customer, or employee information leaked in the cyberattack.

The investigation is still ongoing, there is hope that the team claiming the attack could’ve left traces of how they got access to the servers and may lead to the capture of the criminals. Right now, the hackers are selling information regarding the FTP authentication and Koei Tecmo’s official social media accounts through bitcoins.

Cyberattacks have caused massive damage for companies like Nintendo and Capcom. Both companies saw critically sensitive data from employees and future projects leaked online. Fortunately for Koei, the security breach was quickly spotted before the hackers could do more damage.

Koei Tecmo has been adding some of its IPs to the streaming service PlayStation Now. Right now the development team is producing the localization of Atelier Ryza 2. A highly anticipated game that saw its release in Japan on December 3. The game is expected to reach America on January 26, 2021, and January 29 in Europe. The RPG will launch on PC, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.
