Konami Revenue Rose 33% Thanks To Mobile Games

Konami Digital Entertainment division’s profits have increased 33.1 percent, the publisher also reported a 75. 3 percent of increase in operating profit.

As noted in the company’s fiscal report for the nine months ended December 30, 2020, revenue rose by 33.1 percent year-on-year to 144.6 billion yen ($1.37 billion), while operating profit increased by 75.3 percent to 50.9 billion yen ($482.5 million) over the same period.

During the financial report, Konami affirmed that the growth was driven by mobile titles eFootball PES 2021 and Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links.

In the domestic market, Professional Baseball Spirits A and Jikkyou Pawafuru Puroyakyu, and the acclaimed Nintendo Switch title Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa, Heisei, Reiwa mo Teiban for exceeding 2.5 million shipments.

Konami said that growth was driven by mobile titles like eFootball Winning Eleven 2021 (better known as eFootball PES 2021 in the west) and Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links.

The publisher also confirmed the development of new games for Android, iOS, and consoles due to COVID-19 affecting their amusement and gambling business.

In the amusement industry market, the coronavirus outbreak around the world had an effect on sales of amusement machines and e-amusement participation (revenue share business) due to temporal closure of amusement facilities.

As a result, casino facilities were closedtemporarily from March 2020, except in some areas. Although certain restrictions remain, most of casino facilities in the U.S. have resumed operations in phases and the market is recovering.

In the entertainment market, future development of game contents is expected through the functional enhancement of various devices, including mobile devices and video game consoles, and the standardization of next-generation communication systems.

Konami’s esports operations will see the publisher hosting digital tournaments and events, however, those events might be limited “limited by the coronavirus outbreak.”

Konami recently announced the dismantling of some of its production divisions, due to the changing needs of the market.
