CD Projekt Red co-founder Marcin Iwinski released a short video yesterday on Cyberpunk 2077’s official YouTube channel. The executive started by apologizing to fans for the disastrous release of the game, he also shared some insight into the reasons behind the delays, bugs, and glitches that damaged the reputation of the studio and its game.
Iwinski talked about the performance of Cyberpunk 2077 on Xbox One, Xbox One X, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 4 Pro. He admits that he thought those platforms were the initial target hardware for the project, however, the focus of the development team was on PC.
“We wanted it to look epic on PCs and then adjusting it to console, especially old gens.”Certainly, this polemic decision was the main reason behind the performance issues on PS4 and Xbox One.
Iwinski and journalist refer to the PS4 and Xbox One as old-gen consoles or last-gen consoles, the problem behind the use of the term is that not many players have a next-gen system, while CD Projekt does not disclose how many console players purchased the game on PS4 and Xbox One, it’s expected that a large majority of the game’s sales on consoles are on “old-gen hardware”.
The polemic decision made the game on the verge to be unplayable on PS4 and Xbox One, causing the removal of the game on PlayStation Network, and refunds across platforms.
“Things did not look super difficult at first, we knew the hardware gap, but time has proven that we underestimated the task.” Said Iwinski as an apologetic reason behind the release status of the game, something that does not make sense as the development team knew that the game wasn’t ready for release.
“I and the entire leadership team are deeply sorry for this. Please don’t fault any of our teams for what happened. It was our call to release the game, though we never, ever intended anything like this to happen. I assure you we will do our best to regain your trust.”
Jason Schreier has received anonymous information from Cyberpunk 2077’s development team, they affirm that Iwinski often lied about the working conditions and the goals set by the management were impossible to reach. There were also leaks from the development team that affirmed that the game could’ve been delayed to 2021 due to the number of bugs and glitches present in the game.
Marcin Iwinski is facing two large problems, more than 79 percent of players have stopped playing on Steam, and they are also facing a third-class suit in the US.
