One of the big announcements during last week’s E3 event was the reveal of FromSoftware’s next big IP, Elden Ring. It’s been confirmed that A Song of Ice and Fire’s author George RR Martin consulted with the team on the game, leaving many fans to assume that he played a big part in writing the game’s narrative and story.
In fact, however, it was revealed late last week during an interview with IGN that Martin never contributed to the game’s overall plotline, but provided the details for the game’s surrounding lore and mythology. Soulsborne legend himself, Hidataka Miyazaki, wrote the game’s story, stating the reasoning behind Martin only sticking to writing the lore was that video game’s storytelling format was far too limiting for Martin’s often more complex or ambitious creations.
On that note, Miyazaki did mention how deep the characters and lore in Elden Ring are thanks to Martin’s contribution, stating “Thanks to Martin’s lore, Elden Ring’s world and characters naturally have a lot more depth and personality.” Miyazaki went on to confirm that he was indeed writing the story for Elden Ring, so Darls Souls and Bloodeborne fans can expect the same style of writing for the newest title out of FromSoftware.
Elden Ring was officially announced for the PS4, Xbox One and PC with a currently undisclosed release date.
